Historic Sausalito Legacy Property
134 Crescent Avenue
An Enduring Family Estate with Remarkable Provenance

Offered for the first time in nearly 80 years, this cherished family residence stands as a rare testament to Sausalito’s architectural heritage and storied past. Built in 1948 by Roy and Cynthia Stram, the home has remained with the Stram family since its inception, preserved in much of its original condition and thoughtfully designed with accessibility in mind.

The Stram family’s legacy is deeply intertwined with American cultural history. Cynthia was the daughter of Carlotta Monterey O’Neill—celebrated actress and Miss California 1919—and stepdaughter to Eugene O’Neill, the nation’s most renowned playwright. Cynthia spent her formative years at the iconic Tao House in Danville, now a national historic site, where she assisted O’Neill with his manuscripts, further enriching the home’s distinguished provenance.

Prominent Northern California connections include Cynthia’s grandfather, Melvin C. Chapman, who served as Mayor of Oakland in the 1890s and is credited with the establishment of Lake Merritt. These deep Bay Area roots are reflected in the family’s longstanding civic engagement and contributions to the local community.

The residence housed libraries and heirlooms passed down through generations, with numerous volumes from Carlotta and Eugene O’Neill’s personal collection now donated to Sausalito’s Friends of the Library. Select family items are also available at a local Caledonia Street boutique, Tivoli, offering a unique opportunity for collectors.

Jerry and Maxey Stram continued the family’s tradition of involvement, leaving a lasting impact on Sausalito’s cultural life through contributions to the Art Festival, Lions Club, and local institutions. Personal memorabilia, such as author’s copies and treasured items from Eugene O’Neill, will be featured by the PBA Auction House in Berkeley for those interested in acquiring a piece of literary history.
